How to Check Your Transmission Fluid

Transmission Fluid Change

You might know how to check your oil, but do you know how to check your transmission fluid in ? Your transmission fluid plays a big role in your car’s performance and fuel efficiency, so it’s important to keep an eye on your fluid levels on a regular basis. When your transmission fluid is too low or too dirty, your engine can’t get the lubrication that it needs to perform at its best. Luckily, learning how to check your transmission fluid is easy. Let’s find out how to do it.

Checking Transmission Fluid Levels

While our service department is always happy to offer inspections and recommendations, you can learn how to check your transmission fluid from your garage.

  1. Turn on your car and let the engine warm-up.
  2. Find the dipstick for your transmission fluid. Check your owner’s manual if you need help.
  3. Remove the dipstick and touch the fluid to check its condition. Move it around your fingers and see how it feels.
  4. If the fluid is clear with a pink hue, it’s in good shape.
  5. If it feels dirty or smells burnt, you need to schedule a fluid replacement.
  6. Wipe the dipstick with a rag and place it back in the reservoir.
  7. Pull the dipstick back out to check the fluid level.
  8. If the fluid level falls below the “Full” marking, use a funnel to add more.

How Often Do You Check Your Transmission Fluid?

We recommend checking your transmission fluid every month for the best results on the roads. It’s a good idea to check your power steering fluid and engine oil as well, so you can ensure that all your components are working properly. Your owner’s manual will give more specific advice on other monthly maintenance requirements that will benefit your particular make and model.

Transmission Fluid 101

While learning how to check your transmission fluid is simple, there are a few tips to keep in mind during your DIY service:

  • From automatic to manual configurations, not all transmission designs are the same – and not all transmission fluid is the same either. Take a look at your owner’s manual to find out what you need.
  • If you have a manual transmission, changing your fluid is a little more labor-intensive, and you’ll need a jack to get the job done. Feel free to schedule your service at Jackson Family of Dealerships to save a little time and effort.
  • Depending on your driving habits and vehicle type, you’ll want to change your transmission fluid every 50,000 to 100,000 miles. If you notice unusual delays during gear shifts or other unusual performance issues, we recommend stopping by for a check-up.
